Co-Parenting Tips: How Close Should Divorced Parents Live to Each Other?

Recently, world famous supermodel Gisele Bundchen bought a new home a few
minutes away from her ex-husband, NFL superstar Tom Brady.
According to The Fresno Bee, Bundchen, who already purchased a $1.25 million
home in the area earlier this year, has bought an $11.5 million house
near the $17 million site of a home Brady is building.
Bundchen and Brady share custody of their kids. Having their homes so close
together will make co-parenting their children much easier than it would
be if they lived far apart.
Reasons Divorced Parents Should Live Close to Each Other
When divorced parents live close to one another, it can benefit their co-parenting
relationship in a variety of ways, including the following:
-
Convenient for everyone – Obviously, co-parenting involves a lot of coordination and collaboration.
Both those things are more difficult the further apart divorced parents
live from one another. In most cases, it is best if divorced parents live
within 20 miles of each other. It allows the kids to live close to both
their parents no matter which parent they’re staying with at the
time. If an emergency involving the children comes up, neither parent
is too far away to respond. Plus, it’s just convenient for everyone
involved. Both parents will be close to their children’s school
and since they live near each other, when the kids go back and forth between
each parent’s home, it will only involve a quick trip.
-
Helps both parents stay involved – Since both parents live near each other and their kids, they will
be able to be involved in whatever their children have going on. Whether
it’s little league, a school play, or just a birthday party, distance-wise
it will be easy for both parents to remain involved in the big and small
moments of their children’s everyday lives.
-
It’s in the best interests of the kids – In most cases, it’s better for children if both their parents
are involved in their lives, especially when they’re younger. When
divorced parents live close to each other, this allows their children
to access either of their parents pretty much anytime they need them.
Having that level of access to their parents is a big positive and makes
a huge difference in children’s lives.
